Orchid Bookkeeping is operated by Elaine Valentine

I have over 15 years experience working in various accounts departments from small privately owned businesses to large multinational corporations. I am a member of the ‘Institute of Certified Bookkeepers’ and hold a Practice Licence from them. (Practice No.8746)

I normally use Quickbooks Pro or a Spreadsheet for customers who do not have their own accounting software or other system, depending on the needs of the individual customer. I also have experience using Sage and I am willing to use any other software provided by the customer.  If you find it easier using paper then that is fine too, I’ll just have to teach you the benefits of computerised!  Joking aside if someone wants to carry on with a paper system there is always the option of combining them to get all the advantages of both.

I do not carry out tax returns myself but for those customers that do not already have their own accountant and are looking for this service I work closely with a qualified tax technician, Gillian Martin.  Gillian spent 20 years doing tax returns in the offices of a larger Accountancy Practice before going self employed herself.  Therefore she has plenty experience as well as being a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians.  She offers a friendly ‘no jargon’ service. I can pass on your bookkeeping records to Gillian and liaise with her directly on your behalf or if you prefer you can contact Gillian yourself.

I decided to go down the self employed route after being made redundant approx 7 years ago. I have been based in Fife for the  past 6 years but have recently re-located to Bonnybridge and I am therefore looking for new clients in the Falkirk and Cumbernauld areas.

I initially intended to provide admin services to smaller businesses although I soon found that this was not a priority for them. The thing they really struggled with was their bookkeeping.  This seemed to be either due to lack of time, knowledge or total disinterest in the subject.  After all most people did not go into business to be bookkeepers.

Although I had been working in accounts offices after completing an HND in 1993 it was a long time since I had completed a profit and loss account, so I decided I should do a refresher course before offering this service to my customers.  I did this through a correspondence course and then took the “Institute of Certified Bookkeepers” exams.
